# Hybrid Exploration - Effortless HANDS FREE LOCOMOTION! (GfwdUns1nLM, 917s)
[Music] it's me nem sony welcome back to uh the hybrid presence system welcome back to vr today we are looking at a slight experimental idea that i've got for locomotion now what you're looking at right now is the regular hybrid presence system meaning that i can sort of walk into walls and push on them and nothing happens uh you can't go through walls or anything like that i can jump as usual i can walk on random platform heights and walk-up ramps and all that good stuff so all the very basic uh hybrid present system without the character ragdoll however there is a little bit more to it now the regular method of moving is uh obviously that i have a directional analog stick which allows me to move in in whatever direction i want to and then i have the hybrid hybrid locomotion system which is a sway-based system which then blends into a jog now i've slightly modified that to account for what i've been thinking of today now what's happening today is i wanted to add to this system an ability to sort of relax the system a little bit more now up until now obviously i use the joystick for directionality and the idea of activating the system so if i don't do that me moving around like this and jogging in place nothing happens if i push the analog stick then when i jog i actually run in the direction that i want to go so if i wanted to strafe left i can do that if i wanted to strafe right easy peasy however that always requires moving that analog stick and i thought what about if you wanted to extend this to something a little bit more explorative where you're sort of um traveling vast areas and now the actual comfort of the system of walking is quite easy it's quite easy on the effort side of things and that was always the aim that i wanted to go for with these systems which is i needed it to be as effortless as possible for at least walking and then for jogging obviously it just needed to feel quite good and that's the point of the whole locomotion system but you're still having to push around those analog sticks right the right one obviously gives you the fake turn and the left one gives you the direction of the movement so i decided on adding something that i'm going to call hybrid exploration mode so exploration mode is an idea that i came up with just recently it's very much based on a few other designs for locomotion but coupled with hybrid locomotion the regular sort of sway based motion and all of that good stuff to do this all you have to do is do nothing and put the controllers down and you can see that i've now put my controllers down so here you can see i've got no hand tracking nothing like that i'm on a cv one an oculus rift cv1 so there's no hand tracking there's no sensors or anything that can actually track the world and all i'm doing and i've placed my controllers down there which you can see in the vr world right now and all i'm going to do is step in the direction i want to go but that coupled with the hybrid locomotion system allows me to actually control how i want to move so let's say i wanted to move this way and then i wanted to go up this rum i can do that very easily just by walking in the direction i want to go at this point you can see the the wire is actually wrapping around me a little bit so i'm just gonna unwrap unravel it there oh i've fallen down this little gap i don't know why i left that gap there i should have just lifted the ground there you can see that the locomotion system itself allows me to run in the direction i want to go or just walk if i want to obviously if i don't move much at all then i don't move much at all but if i'm walking in place backwards in this case because of the problem with my tracking here my tracking space then i can just go whichever direction i want to go and even though it looks like oh i'm actually facing the wrong way here even though it looks like i'm just going in the direction of my head tracking it's actually not based on the tracking at all i can just tell the system to go up this ramp or without turning at all go back down the rum you can see that it's not based on my hand tracking because my hand tracking is doing nothing because there is no hand tracking right now the controller's on the desk there and you can see that i'm i'm still able to use the locomotion system as i want to and the good thing about this is it still includes all of that cool burst stuff that i i worked on to make the locomotion system feel direct and solid so what you can do is you can stand in one place and get ready and then start running [Music] and then you can stop very very easily um it's very much something that you've seen before but mixed in with the hybrid presence system and the hybrid locomotion system and because i just crashed into a wall yeah it takes a little bit to get used to it uh but because uh because you've got this sort of zone that you've you've positioned so i've specially set where i wanted that in my room scale space and i'll be updating this as well to to account for something more than that it allows you to just sort of be aware of your surroundings without ever hitting anything as well now my surroundings obviously there's like a box over here somewhere and there's obviously a desk here but because that's the end of my my threshold here i walk that much and i know that i'm going towards that desk i know that if i go this way i'm going towards the computer i know that if i go this way i'm going towards that sofa and this way i'm going towards the the things behind me i do apologize for my messy kitchen i like to do some cooking um and there you go that's the idea here it's all about being able to naturally walk around and of course if you didn't have the tether here if you had the the sort of modern quest and all of that cool stuff you wouldn't have a cable as well protecting you and stopping you from being able to turn around here so you'd just be able to naturally walk around this circle here and even without moving like you don't have to look in that direction you can just look around and fall down you can look around whilst you walk in the direction you want to go so obviously i can look at you guys while i walk backwards or while i walk sideways here and go up that rump nice and comfortably and you can see it's very comfortable even though i can completely stop without really putting much effort in so i can walk along here walk a little bit backwards and let's try and move this this area here navigate this area without even looking really in the direction i want to go and then i can just jog up this little thing jog up this ramp here and there we go now we can look around we're standing in one place and then if i want to just drop and then run up this thing here now unfortunately the one thing that i haven't added to this system is jumping it's uh it's obviously not that easy to jump when you don't have any buttons but of course you can very easily just pick up your controllers and then rotate and move in the direction you want to go using the analog sticks now this wouldn't be active all the time i could very easily just put it onto a button put it onto a button or something or uh straight in the sort of first menu that you pop up with you just press the pause menu switch it on press the pause menu again and put your controllers down you can imagine if you are walking through something like skyrim if you're walking through something like skyrim or maybe any other massive open world game maybe something like gta where you just want to be able to walk around without having to mess around with these controllers i'm very cool if you if i did have head um hand tracking as well what i'd be able to do is put these controllers down walk around in the world and then just use the hand tracking just use the hand tracking while in game switching between a controller and hand tracking just instantly like that so what that allows you to do then is you can put the controller down you can put the controller down right and then just switch to a high fidelity complete control with your fingers and actually do stuff in the game or in in virtual reality whatever you're using this for this could be used super duper easy um as a form of locomotion within a game world or within something where you're not even having to be at your desk obviously one of the big things about about the modern quest and and the reason that announcement recently is is so cool to people is the idea that it's completely mobile completely mobile and on top of that with all the technologies that they're throwing into it the ability to use these devices completely almost completely without any hand controllers or anything like that no game stuff just a headset what you could do with something like this is you could stand in in a spot which is nice and comfortable with with no no nothing surrounding you maybe in the park or something like that throw your headset on tell the game tell the tell the system that this is my standing spot this is my threshold that i want that the area that i'm allowed to move in and there you go you can just walk around or walk or run or whatever you want to do and you can just do that instantly no need for game controllers no need for anything the ability to just walk comfortably as well and you can see here i'm very very easily walking and then very very quickly i can sneak around corners very very quickly switch to a run and without trying i'm always aware of my surroundings even without looking at it even without looking at you guys i know that if i step this way i'm going towards you guys i'm going too far towards the desk so i stop and that's where you can see on this little radar here you can see the little blue circle is me and this the white circle is actually the range in which i want to allow movement when the blue goes out of the circle here it means i've gone out of range and at that point i know i've gone too far and even if i took a step back i would still be within range to give the system 100 of my movement so as long as this blue circle is within this white circle right that's the limit of my movement system and i can get movement out of it without anything beyond there now in addition to this what i would like to do which i'll try and do over the next few days uh so because this was actually written within the day today i'd literally just thought of this while looking at some other cool locomotion systems out there and i thought okay well i'm going to try that with hybrid and here here's the result so i wrote this today completely from scratch and well i just sort of made a new project through in my template stuff and my basic hybrid presence system stuff and uh there you go it just works the way i wanted it to um yeah now what i wanted to do with this as well to expand on it is that i could um i could set up a threshold based movement of this radar as well not the radar but the actual circle around you so that when you do go too far provided you have enough space so an overall limit will still be accounted for but provided you have enough space in the room or in in in whatever area you're in in your big office area or in your little park area provided you have enough space you could carry on moving and that whole central center part of your room would move with you provided you're within the the game world limits the the limits of your actual room scale space so that allows you to not have to move all the way back to the actual center the center itself would just move with you so you're always on this edge of the circle even if you go a little further it'll just move the whole thing so that you can just step back here and this will be your center now and that would work within range of your overall room limits ideally i'd be able to use the guardian system for oculus or the valve chaperone system to determine what the overall limits of your play space are and then from that we could just have these circles within that space just moving to follow you and allow you to move however you want to it's really really cool and especially once you get the hang of it here you can really just move wherever you want to very nice and easy i can jog underneath here i can walk over here and then very quickly i can jog over here it's very very easy very very easy to work with and honestly i'm quite enjoying um i i quite enjoyed making this today um i that's about it really i just wanted to show you this idea here if you if you like it i'll maybe try and get a demo of this out uh just to get people to see how it feels try it out and again remember the idea here is i've got just head tracking nothing else there is no foot tracking on my socks my ub socks over here uh yeah it was a nice gift um there's no tracking on my hip there's no elbow tracking and i don't even have hand tracking right now it's really cool that i can just do this without even trying and i can just very comfortably move slowly a little bit faster by walking or really really quickly by running there you go nice and easy thanks very much for watching this is the first vr video i've done in a very long time where i'm not using hand controllers i've not got controllers in my hands so yeah it's been a bit a bit of an unusual video today but uh yeah thanks very much for watching hopefully you enjoyed it if you like the idea uh go ahead and post some comments in in the comments and uh yeah give me some ideas if you do feel like you could expand on it thanks very much for watching and i'll see you in the next one where i'll be hopefully trying to do a little bit of an update to tubby supercar otherwise i'll be back with hybrid present system and maybe some more of that and if you guys do like the streets of excuse me streets of rage video that i did earlier um then go ahead let me know and maybe i'll expand on that and finish the game so thanks very much for watching see you in the next one goodbye
